Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program starts in August
August 1, 2008 - The Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Aging Services (DAS) has received approximately $250,000 in federal funds from the United States Department of Agriculture for this year's Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). The Farmers' Market Program will run from August 11, 2008, to September 30, 2008.
Georgians urged to take precautions against West Nile Virus
August 12, 2008 - The Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health reminds individuals across the state to take precautions against West Nile Virus (WNV) as experts begin mosquito surveillance and testing for arboviral diseases.
Fulton County DFCS hosts back-to-school fair for foster kids
August 4, 2008 – On August 9, the Fulton County Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) will host a back-to-school community health fair for more than 1,300 foster children. The health fair will be at the Southwest DFCS Service Center at 515 Fairburn Road from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. This year’s event theme is "Growing Healthy Families" and is meant to enhance the personal, physical, material and nutritional readiness of every DFCS child and family as they return to school in August.
Disaster recovery efforts volunteers encouraged to register in SERVGA
August 31, 2008 – During disaster recovery efforts volunteers provide crucial assistance that allows first responders to focus on the most fragile members of our society. The most effective way to become a volunteer is by registering with a statewide program such as the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) or the Georgia Nurse Alert system through SERVGA (pronounced serve Georgia.)
Department of Human Resources holds Public Budget Hearing
August 1, 2008 - The Board of Human Resources, which oversees and sets policy for the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), will seek public input as the agency and its Board plan for the state fiscal year 2010 budget. In an effort to become more effective in its delivery of services, the Board of the Georgia Department of Human Resources will hold a budget hearing on August 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Helene S. Mills Senior Multipurpose facility at 515 John Wesley Dobbs Drive, Atlanta, GA 30312.
DHR offers tips to Medicare beneficiaries on avoiding identity theft
August 15, 2008 – The Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Aging Services’ GeorgiaCares SMP program is providing tips to Medicare beneficiaries on protecting themselves against identity theft and Medicare fraud. GeorgiaCares SMP provides health insurance counseling, as well as assistance with reporting and following up on Medicare fraud, abuse and error. GeorgiaCares toll-free number is 1-800-669-8387.
