Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the U.S.
May 1, 2008 – Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, and a leading cause of serious long-term disability. Strokes can occur at any age, but nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65. The risk of having a stroke more than doubles each decade after age 55, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
More than 2.6 million Americans over 65 have asthma
May 2, 2008 – Asthma is a chronic lung disease that causes breathing problems and can be life-threatening. Asthma can occur for the first time at any age, including in your 30s through your 70s. Scientists are not sure what causes asthma, but they do know that the basic problem is inflammation of the airways and the illness can be inherited.
May is Child Support Month in Georgia
May 1, 2008 – The Office of Child Support Services is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. OCSS will mark this milestone during the month of May as it celebrates Child Support Services month with a variety of activities at each local office. Governor Sonny Perdue designated May 2008 as Child Support Services Month in Georgia.
Macon OCSS to host Fathers and Families Job Fair
May 1, 2008 – On Wednesday, May 7, 2008, the Macon Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) will sponsor a job fair to provide parents new career opportunities and the chance to increase their wages. The job fair will be held at the Memorial Gymnasium located at 763 Long Street in Macon, Georgia from 10:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. The job fair is open to all job seekers.
Honor seniors during National Older Americans Month in May
May 2, 2008 – There is a growing population of older adults in Georgia and throughout the nation who have a wealth of experience and knowledge. They deserve recognition and respect. A good time to show these individuals how much we care is during National Older Americans Month in May. This year’s theme is "Working Together for Strong, Healthy and Supportive Communities." The Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Aging Services (DAS) and the Aging Network are urging everyone to honor older adults this month by taking time to share how much they care for them and value their life experiences.
HIV Community Planning Group to meet in Augusta
May 5, 2008 – Community members will get an opportunity to offer input on the development of the statewide, comprehensive plan for the prevention of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) during an upcoming meeting in Augusta. The Georgia Community Planning Group (GCPG) for Prevention will discuss and continue developing their prevention plan at its next quarterly meeting on Monday, May 12 at 9:00 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Doubletree Hotel, 2651 Perimeter Parkway in Augusta, Georgia.
Georgians encouraged to get life-saving screenings during National Women's Health Week
May 8, 2008 – The Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health is joining the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Women’s Health in celebrating National Women’s Health Week. The annual observance officially kicks off on Mother’s Day, May 11th, and will continue through May 17th.
Eppicard debit scam alert: Child Support payments
May 19, 2008 – The Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) would like to alert the public of a phishing e-mail scam that is being sent to some EPPICard debit cardholders. Phishing is a type of scam designed to steal an individual's personal information. OCSS does not request information such as social security numbers, card numbers or PIN numbers via e-mail from EPPICardholders. We ask our customers not to respond to email requests for this information.

'Celebration' honors academic achievements of foster care teens
May 21, 2008 – Graduating from high school and enrolling in college are milestones that most foster care youth don’t reach. Yet for more than 200 Georgia foster care teens, these accomplishments are a reality as they will be honored during the annual "Celebration of Excellence." In addition, 28 Georgia foster care teens will be awarded more than $67,500 in scholarships for their academic achievements.
