WIC wants to hear from you
April 27, 2007 – The Georgia Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) will hold its annual public comment period May 1–31, 2007. During this period, Georgians are invited to comment on the program and to suggest ways to improve WIC services.
Seeking help a good thing for those emotionally affected by recent tornadoes
April 13, 2007 - For residents affected by recent southwest Georgia tornados, state officials say seeking help is a good thing to do. DHR is providing crisis counseling services through Middle Flint Behavioral Health Care, a local area service provider, and includes a tornado survivor helpline: 1-800-342-7843.
Georgia partners seek to keep kids safe in cars and airplanes
April 27, 2007 – Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death to children between the ages of one and 14. Car safety seats reduce the risk of death by 71% for infants and by 54% for children ages one to four years*. Children need to be protected in all vehicles, including airplanes. Many child safety seats that are approved for motor vehicles are also approved for use in airplanes.
Georgia 3rd in the nation for child immunization coverage
April 20, 2007 – The Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), Division of Public Health (DPH) indicates that immunizations have a huge impact on a child’s overall health because they not only protect against serious diseases and even death but they also promote a child’s immunity level. The 2005 National Immunization Survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ranks Georgia third in the nation for child immunization coverage.
Everyone can help prevent child abuse
April 20, 2007 – Each year nearly 3 million reports of suspected child abuse are filed. Many more cases may never get reported. Tragically, in the U.S. three children die each day as a result of abuse or neglect. In Dodge County alone, from July 1, 2005 through June 2006, there were 137 confirmed cases of abuse and/or neglect.
Each year, up to $41 million go unclaimed by homeless Georgians with mental illness - DHR has solution
April 4, 2007 – Annually, up to $41 million in social security entitlements go unclaimed by homeless Georgians with mental illness. With support from a new three–year federal grant entitled "SOAR," the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) will help homeless people with mental illness significantly enhance their access to social security benefits by helping them complete complicated applications.
DHR recognizes National Public Health Week – Focus on Emergency Preparedness
April 2, 2007 - The Georgia Department of Human Resources, in recognition of National Public Health Week’s theme of "Take the First Step!" regarding preparing for public health emergencies, is conducting a statewide emergency preparedness test. DHR is also encouraging Georgians to recognize National Public Health Week by ensuring their families begin planning and preparing for a potential emergency or disaster.
DHR encourages Georgians to think about long-term care planning during 'Own Your Future' campaign
April 17, 2007 – More young and mid-life Georgians are now thinking about providing for their long-term care thanks to the “Own Your Future” Long-Term Care Planning Campaign, which kicked off this past January in Georgia. The GeorgiaCares program and the local Area Agencies on Aging have been helping individuals understand the importance of planning for their long-term care needs and inviting them to order a free “Own Your Future” Long-Term Care Planning Kit.
"Wear Green" on May 4 to promote children's mental health
April 25, 2007 - The Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases (MHDDAD) is encouraging Georgians to “Wear Green” on May 4 to promote Child Depression Awareness Day.
