The season for West Nile Virus continues into the fall
August 16, 2006 - The phrase "Back to School" brings many things to mind including a feeling that the end of summer is right around the corner. Although kids are headed back to class and family vacations are over, DHR-Division of Public Health (DPH) wants to remind parents and teachers that mosquitoes in Georgia haven’t called it quits for the season yet.
Statewide Smokefree Air Act helps Georgians breathe easier
August 16, 2006 – Smoke-free environments are the only approach that effectively protect nonsmokers from the dangers of secondhand smoke, confirms a recent report by the U.S. Surgeon General. Georgia legislators have already taken steps to protect residents from secondhand smoke exposure wherever they live, work, or play with passage of a statewide smoking ban, the "Georgia Smokefree Air Act of 2005."
State leadership to participate in nation's largest mental health consumer convention held in St. Simons, Georgia
August 21, 2006 – Recognized as the largest consumer convention in the nation, the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network (GMHCN) will convene its 15th annual summer convention to present its 2007 legislative priorities to the Georgia Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases (MHDDAD) and the Governor’s Advisory Council on Mental Health.
South Georgia youth drug prevention program producing first generation high-school graduates and a 0% teenage pregnancy rate
August 7, 2006 – A South Georgia program designed to prevent substance abuse among youth at risk is taking young people off street corners and getting them on track to becoming the first in their families to go to college, in addition to breaking cycles of teenage pregnancy.
Renota Free named new Rabun County DFCS Director
August 14, 2006 – Renota Free has been named the new director of the Rabun County Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS), effective August 16th, according to state DFCS Director Mary Dean Harvey.

New child support facility opens in East Dublin
August 9, 2006 - As part of a drive to improve customer service for families and children throughout Georgia and help build the region's economy, the Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) has brought together some of its operations from across the state to an innovative new facility, or "hub," in East Dublin.
Metro Atlanta Public Health leaders and Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation urge students to "Be Active"
August 23, 2006 – More than 300 students from Clayton, Cobb/Douglas, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties will participate in aerobic workouts on Wednesday, August 23 with Atlanta Falcons’ cheerleaders and tour "Bodies…The Exhibition." Metro Atlanta public health leaders, the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation, and elected officials have partnered to host this event for "Be Active Georgia," an initiative aimed at helping youth to realize the importance of regular, vigorous activity.

August 28, 2006 – Parents who pay child support and need help communicating with the custodial parent about spending time with their children may qualify for help from a new mediation service offered in DeKalb and Cobb County by the Georgia Department of Human Resources’ Office of Child Support Services (OCSS).

August 28, 2006 – Parents who pay child support and would like to improve their communications with the custodial parent about parenting and visitation issues may qualify for help from a program offered in the five-county Metro Atlanta area by the Georgia Department of Human Resources’ Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) , through a contract with Families First.
GeorgiaCares warns Georgians about Spanish sweepstake scam
August 17, 2006 – The GeorgiaCares Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) project wants to warn Georgia’s seniors and others to be aware of the El Gordo Spanish Sweepstake lottery scam which claims that the recipient has won money in an international lottery. SMP, which is administered through the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Aging Services (DAS), is informing consumers that scammers are sending letters in an attempt to initiate a dialogue with potential victims and subsequently trick them into sending money.
Georgia colleges expand opportunities for degrees in social work
August 21, 2006 – The State of Georgia’s Child Welfare Education grant will be expanded this year with new offerings in North and South Georgia for those interested in becoming social workers. The Child Welfare Education (IV-E) Grant program provides tuition assistance for those interested in the social services field.
Emergency preparedness exercise to help Georgia handle a terrorist event completed
August 9, 2006 - For two days this week, business was as usual in Glynn County Georgia with one difference: the county was under attack by a terrorist preparing a biological weapon. That was the case for the more than 85 participants operating in a state-wide emergency preparedness drill on the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center property in Brunswick.
